Correction Window

Introduction

The “Correction Window” is a small window that allows you to correct mistakes made by Microsoft Engine. The engine learns through such corrections. To show the correction window:

1 Right-click on a word in Dictation Pad.

The correction window shows information about the last word you spoke. If you are using Dictation Pad it shows the currently selected word. If Microsoft Dictation makes a speech recognition mistake, you should use the correction window to select the correct word.

If you right-click on the correction window you will bring up the context menu. It has a number of different options you might want to try.

Correcting mistakes

To correct a mistake using the correction window:

1 Find a word that Microsoft Dictation got wrong and right-click on it.
2 The “Correction Window” will appear beneath the word. It shows you a list of words that sound similar to the one you said. A recording of what you said will be played. The recording is only played when the Correction Window is open.
3 Look through the list for the word you really said, and click on it. The text in Dictation Pad will change to the correct word.

Using your voice to correct

You can use your voice to “click” on the right word in the correction window:

1 If the Correction Window isn’t visible then right click on a word.
2 Speak until dictation makes a mistake.
3 Find the correct word in the list and look at the number beside that word.
4 Say “choose-<number>.” Example: If the second word was correct you could say, “
choose-two.”
5 Microsoft Dictation will fix the word.

Resizing the correction window

You can resize the correction window:

1 Move the mouse pointer over the edge of the correction window so that the cursor changes into the resizing arrows.
2 Click the left mouse button and drag. This resizes the correction window.
3 Making the window taller causes it to show more alternatives. Sizing it smaller reduces the number of alternatives.

Locking the correction window in place

By now you’ve noticed that the Correction Window always places itself beneath or near the word being corrected. Some people find this constant motion distracting.

To keep the Correction Window from moving:

1 Bring up the correction window if you haven
’t already done so.
2 Click on the push-pin toolbar button.
3 Now the window will remain stationary and you may place it where you wish.

Typing words into the correction window

The Correction Window can display an edit field that allows you to type in corrections. Then you can type in a word even if it doesn’t appear on the list.

To try the edit field:

1 Right-click on the correction window. A pop-up menu will appear.
2 Select “Show” and then “Edit control” to show the edit field on the Correction Window.
3 Right-click on a misrecognized word. The Correction Window will change to correct the new word.
