approach |
|
This article is being written in response to the assignment
to carry out the complete research on various issues related to
Logon for Research-Lab's upcoming computer security
product's campaign. |
|
This article is going to cover the important logon
issues such as services, products, service providers and Research-Lab's
approach to Logon. |
|
Research is focused on the following points
- Logon...general definition
- Session
- User Name
- User Authentication
- Remote Logon
- Normal User Logon
- Logon Script

Logon...general definition
The procedure by which a user gains access to, and initiates
communication with, a computer in a time-sharing mode. Usually requires
an authorized username and password. The opposite of logoff. Also
written log on or log-on.
- Session
A lasting connection between a user and a network
port/computer, typically a server, usually involving the exchange of
many packets between the user's computer and the server. A session
is typically implemented as a layer in a network protocol to
maintain client-server architecture.
- User Name
A unique name for each user of computer services which can
be accessed by several persons. Use is suppose to pass user name
& password in order to get access to system or any access
protected source.
-
User Authentication
After passing user name and password operating system
validates the user name and password against that user's profile
stored at the time of registration, if user is validated then only
he will be awarded access to system or else user will receive the
message stating "logon failed".
|
|
Root logon and Normal User logon
System validates users on different levels defined on the basis of
access restriction and permissions.
Root Logon
Activities performed by a system administrator such as
monitoring security configuration, managing allocation of user names and
passwords, monitoring disk space and other resource use, performing
backups, and setting up new hardware and software. System administrator
is the one who has all permissions and authorization to define access
permissions for other users.
User / Domain Logon
User logon is performed by the user who uses a program, however
skillfully, without getting into the internals administration of the
operating system. Access permissions for normal user is monitored and
restricted by the administrator.
|
|
Auto Logon...no password needed environment (Windows 98
platform)
Go to Start>Settings>Control
Panel>Passwords, enter your current password in the box Current
Password and leave blank. in the New Password and the confirmation box.
Then go to the Properties of Network> PRIMARY NETWORK LOGON, select
Windows Logon from the list. Note: if the win98 is in a network,
it may not be able to access the network because it is using blank
password.
|
|
Logon Script
Files that can be assigned to user accounts. Typically a batch file,
a logon script runs automatically every time the user logs on. It can be
used to configure a user's working environment at every logon, and it
allows an administrator to influence a user's environment without
managing all aspects of it. A logon script can be assigned to one or
more user accounts.
Adding Logon Script...(Windows Server 2003)
- Click the Start, point to Administrative Tools,
and then click Computer Management.
- In the console tree, expand Local Users
and Groups, and then click Users.
- In the right pane, right-click the user account that you want,
and then click Properties.
- Click the Profile tab.
In the Logon script box, type the
file name (and the relative path, if necessary) of the logon
script.
- NOTE: If the logon script is stored in a subfolder of the
default logon script path, put the relative path to that folder in
front of the file name. For example, if the Startup.bat logon
script is stored in \\ComputerName\Netlogon\FolderName,
type FolderName\Startup.bat.
- Click Apply, and then click OK.
