Preface
This article is being written in response to the assignment
to carryout complete research on the various issues related to the Telephony for Research-Lab's upcoming
product's campaign.

This article is going to cover the important telephony issues, services, products, service providers and Research-Lab's
approach to Telephony.
|
|
Research is focused on the following topics
|
|
Telephony....general definition
The science behind telephones: sound translated into electrical
signals, which is transmitted and then translated back into sound. This
is also used to refer to computer hardware and/or software that
functions like telephone equipment. See also Internet Telephony.
|
|
TAPI...Telephony Application Programming Interface
Telephony API (TAPI) support for programs that control telephony
devices and IP-based voice connections on the local computer and through
the LAN on servers that are also running the service. The telephony
service enables applications to act as clients to telephony equipment
such as PBXs, telephones, and modems. The service supports the TAPI
under which different wire protocols that communicate with telephony
equipment can be supported. These protocols are implemented in Telephony
Service Providers (TSPs). The telephony service cannot be stopped if
there is another dependent service, such as Remote Access service,
currently active. If no other dependent service is running and you stop
the telephony service, it will be restarted when any application makes
an initialization call to the TAPI interface. If the service is
disabled, no program that depends upon it, including modem support, will
be able to run.

IP Telephony
IP telephony uses the Internet to send audio between two or more
computer users in real time, so the users can converse.

Mobile telephony gives everyone the
opportunity to communicate without being dependent on location, i.e.
outside the fixed telephony network. Many people
find mobile phones useful, and for some people with disabilities, a
mobile phone can be a necessity in certain
situations.
